The only problem
with running MS-DOS 3.3 on a 386/486 system is that it doesn’t on its own
recognise the existence of extended or LIM expanded memory. You can install a
386/486 memory manager and even move some of its device drivers into high
memory, but MS-DOS 3.3 will not make use of LIM expanded memory either to
increase efficiency or to save memory in the 640KByte area of conventional
memory.
The only
exception to this is the RAM disk driver included with some MS-DOS 3.3 systems.
The standard VDISK driver supplied before MS-DOS 4 will use only conventional
memory but some customised versions of MS-DOS include an alternative such as
RAMDRIVE. SYS. This can use either conventional memory, expanded memory or LIM
expanded memory as long as it is available. A careful and selective use of a
RAM disk can speed particular application greatly. To install a RAM disk in LIM
expanded memory use the command:
